How to Maintain Your Pearl Necklace

Now that you own a pearl necklace, you may be wondering what you have to do to take care of it. The truth is that pearls require more care than other gems. They're not hard like diamonds - they are formed from the tissue of living creatures so you have to be careful. I'll tell you what you need to do to prevent damage to your necklace in this article.

The first thing to do is to keep your pearls away from any sort of acids, harsh substances, and heat. This includes cleaners and talcum powder as well as acids from your body, makeup, and perfume. That's why you should always put your necklace on last - you'll minimize exposure to makeup and perfume that way - and take them off first. "Last on, first off" is something that you'll hear often in regards to pearls! You should also keep them away from heat and direct sunlight to avoid damage.

The storage method you choose will also have an impact on how much wear and tear your necklace suffers. Because pearls can be scratched relatively easily, it is important to keep them away from other jewelry. The best (or at least most recommended) option is to store them in a soft bag with a damp linen cloth. Make sure to keep the bag in a relatively cool place too. Avoid airtight containers such as safety deposit boxes. Your necklace needs air. Also, keep in mind that pearl necklaces are typically strung with silk, so to avoid stressing the delicate thread I would recommend against hanging your necklace up. You can still do it, but keep in mind that you will need to restring your pearls more often.

You will have to check your necklace every now and then for damage. Wiping the pearls down with a soft cloth after wear will help prevent build up of body oils and other substances as well as help them maintain their luster. Please avoid using harsh chemicals - pearls can't handle them very well. Also keep an eye on the thread. It will wear out and your pearls will need to be restrung every now and then, but you can avoid doing this too often by not hanging your pearl necklace up and staying out of salt water.

Something I have heard is that pearls need to be worn often to keep their shine, otherwise they will become dull. This is supposedly because they need the humidity from your body or your body oils. I haven't been able to verify this though!
